Restaurant Review: Hermanson’s Steak House in Hondo Texas
Driving out to the ranch on Fathers day weekend we passed through Hondo Texas about noon. Actually it was too close to Noon. Everyone was getting hungry so we decided to stop at Hermansons Steakhouse. I had not been there in over 30 years, but I guessed that they were still good since they were still around.
When we got in, I realized that nothing had changed since aI was last there. I mean Nothing. The food was still good. The only difference was that there was a long line to get in. They did work through the line rather quickly. Our wait was about 25 minutes. If we had arrived a half hour earlier or later, it would have been a much shorter wait.
As we were driving into the parking lot I already knew what I wanted. I was craving that wonderful artery choking Texas Specialty called a Chicken Fried Steak. Hermansons still serves a very good chicken Fried steak. The batter was not too thick and had just the right amount of crunch to it. The meat was a real piece of round steak that had been adequately tenderized. So many place serve un-tenderized round or pressed ground beef. Neither of these is a substitute. The cream gravy was the right consistency. None of the food was too salty unlike so many restaurants.
Along with the entre’ s comes one trip to the salad bar. the salad bar is a meal in itself. Everything is very fresh. There is good variety. However the customers in the restaurant seemed to be a bit on the rude side. If you stand in front of the salad bar more than about 15 seconds, they will run you over and it just makes it kind of disorganized.
the service was great. Our waitress gave us just the right amound of time to look at the menu and then promptly took our order and turned it in. When we finished our salads, or food was there at the table. This lady was a hard worker. I got tired just watching her run around the restaurant. She seemed to have more tables than all the others. She definitely gets a gold star. Waitresses like this definitely earn the 20% tip.
All in all this was a pleasant small town dining experience. If you are ever driving down US90 west of San Antonio, definitely stop and give Hermansons a try.
