Cutback on Flights

Every day we hear about airlines planning on cutting back on flights to certain destinations. OK I know, at first you may ask, “what does this mean to me?” I never travel to those places.

Every time the Airlines make a cutback in Destinations served or flights to a certain destination, there is a trickle down effect to other areas. For example, if the number of airline flights to Savannah is is cut back by one flight. All of the other flights will have to absorb the extra passengers that would have taken the flight that was cut. If for example this happened on a Friday afternoon or any other time the flights were usually all full, then Atlanta would probable have to absorb the traffic. This would lead to fuller flights to and from Atlanta. Since it is a major hub, it could have an affect on flights going just about anywhere in the world.

Another question is how will this affect airfares. Airlines are having to pay higher fuel costs and are currently raising air fares to compensate to the increased cost. having less flights could also increase your air fare.

Airlines have some type of tiered structure for setting airfares. One person may pay $188 for a flight from Houston to Atlanta while another pays over $700. It seems that the marketing departments of the major airlines use some type of algorithm for making this calculation. Putting it simply, if an airplane has 50 seats, 10 may sell for $188, 20 may sell for $288, 10 for $388 and 10 for $688. If you are one of the first 10, you are OK, bu what if you are booking closer to your travel date? All of the seats could have sold at the the lower fares and all that would be left would be the higher fared seats.

With summer on us and many people are taking vacations, some people may be choosing alternate destinations because of decreased flights at another. this will make the flights to the alternate destination more crowded and expensive.

Only the future can tell what is nest for air travellers. it does not look like conditions will be improving any time soon
